How to Care for Silk So It Lasts for Years

Fine silk is more resilient than its reputation suggests — it simply asks for a gentle routine. Follow these steps and a 6A mulberry piece will stay luminous for years.

Washing

Machine-wash cold (about 30°C / 86°F) on a delicate cycle, inside a mesh laundry bag to protect the fabric. Use a small amount of a pH-neutral detergent made for silk or delicates. Avoid regular detergents with enzymes or brighteners, and never use bleach.

Prefer hand-washing? Swirl gently in cool water with silk detergent for a few minutes, then rinse — do not rub, twist or wring.

Drying

Never tumble-dry silk. Press out excess water by rolling the piece in a clean towel, then lay it flat or hang it to dry away from direct sunlight and radiators. Direct heat and strong sun dull silk's sheen over time.

Ironing & storage

If needed, iron on the silk/low setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side. Store clean silk in a cool, dry, dark place; a breathable cotton bag is ideal. Avoid plastic, which traps moisture.

Everyday habits that help

Keep silk away from perfume and alcohol-based products applied directly, and from rough jewellery or velcro. None of this is difficult — a mesh bag, a gentle detergent and a flat dry are most of the work. Treated this way, silk doesn't wear out; it becomes a quiet, lasting luxury.
